Ukraine’s spotlight on the global stage started two years ago when Russia invaded. Today the war continues.
Later today the Ukrainian spirit will take the stage at the Rozsa Center with Speaking Truth to Power. Michigan Tech’s Rozsa Center will invite Ukrainian poet Yuliya Musakovska for a poetry reading ahead of the month’s Rozsa Art Gallery Exhibition.
“For me, anyway, one of the fascinating things with, you know, consuming art, whether it be like viewing visual art or experiencing poetry, listening to music or whatever, is just experiencing sort of other people’s points of view. And I think that, as you had mentioned, the events coming up on the second anniversary of the Russian invasion, it seemed like this was an important point of view to disseminate.” – Terri Frew, Gallery Director, Rozsa Center
This afternoon’s poetry reading will be followed by a panel discussion with Musakovska and Michigan Tech professors Richard Canevez, Stephanie Carpenter, and M. Bartley Seigel. Then tomorrow evening the Rozsa will host the Art Gallery reception for the art exhibition, Simple Machines: Poetry, Letterpress and the Art of a Little Magazine.
“In addition to that, we’ve worked with sound faculty member Mike Maxwell at MTU, who’s installed sort of an audio component to the show where select poems, when you stand in front of them, you’ll hear the poetry being read in the poet’s voice and some cases, it’s in different languages as well. At the reception, we’re going to have some representatives from the Copper Country Community Arts Center in Hancock. And they’re going to be doing some on-site demonstrations and just talking a little bit more about the craft of letterpress printing.” – Terri Frew, Gallery Director, Rozsa Center
Throughout the month the community can enjoy reading Musakovska’s poetry, along other poets, and view letterpress artwork. Those interested in attending the exhibit during February and March should be aware the content does involve themes of war, strong language, and activism describing current conditions in Ukraine.
The poetry reading will start at noon today.
