The Nature Conservancy Hosting Two Guided Hikes in the Keweenaw Heartlands

Known as the crossing place the Keweenaw Peninsula has welcomed many visitors to its forests and shores. Soon enough the Nature Conservancy hopes to guide people across a couple of points of interest in the Keweenaw Heartlands. The Nature Conservancy plans to host two guided hikes in the Keweenaw Peninsula next week. Keweenaw Heartland Project Manager Julia Petersen says that since taking on the project TNC has interacted with the public most often through meetings inside community rooms. But wants to take a break from the projector screen and get out with residents to explore why protecting the heartlands holds such importance to the local area and Earth. The first hike on the 22nd will explore the Helmut and Candis Stern Preserve at Mt Baldy. The six-and-a-half-mile hike is co-hosted by the Keweenaw Hiking Trails Association. The second hike with the nature conservancy will occur two days later on the 24th. On that day the group will explore the Mary MacDonald Preserve at Horseshoe Harbor. Both hiking events will require participants to register online. In 2022 the Nature Conservancy closed a purchase agreement for 32,000 plus acres in Keweenaw County. Those interested in learning more about the hiking opportunities with TNC to explore the Keweenaw heartlands next week can find more details here.
