The Nature Conservancy and Michigan Department of Natural Resources recently updated the community on the progress of the Keweenaw Heartlands Project. Since TNC purchased the 32,000-acre property in 2022, the conservation group has worked with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and interested community groups to transition the property from the conservancy to a managing body that will maintain the forest.
Earlier in the year the Nature Conservancy and Michigan DNR announced a portion of the 32,000 acres will transfer to the state’s department near the Keweenaw Point, beyond Fort Wilkins Historic State Park. The nearly 10,000 acres the DNR will purchase will be guided by a general management Plan. The DNR will also continue to accept feedback for the Keweenaw Point through an online survey. The DNR will need survey responses by November 24th. Those interested in learning more about the Keweenaw Heartlands Project, and the Keweenaw Point lands can find more details here.
