The Big Annie Statue celebrates a major milestone in the project

After many volunteer hours, the Big Annie statue fund has surpassed a major goal of the project. Since 2022 the statue fund’s committee has gathered the community for fundraisers and collected donations while at several area events. And now the fund has collected enough money to make a down payment for the bronze statue.

Well, the $50,000 mark we’re excited about because now we can choose a sculptor make a deposit, and get the project going. But of course, $150,000 is what we may need in the end to pay for the sculpture. – Anita Campbell, Team Member, Big Annie Statue Fund Committee

The project will celebrate reaching 50,000 of the 150,000 dollar goal on Sunday at the bonfire in Houghton. While in attendance the community will hear from the statue fund, and Michigan Technological University archivist Lindsay Hiltunen. Hiltunen will share period photos and other items from the Copper Strike of 1913 during the presentation.

And we do have a local artist on our committee, Lynn Mezzolini, who will be doing a live painting during the event. And then her artwork will be featured in our silent auction. We’re going to have a silent auction. So some lucky person can be the proud owner of Lynn’s art.

And then, of course, Lindsay Hiltonin will be our speaker from the Michigan Tech Archives. She will share her insights and slides about the 1913 strike and the role that Big Annie played in the strike. – Anita Campbell, Team Member, Big Annie Statue Fund Committee

The Big Annie statue celebration on Sunday will cost 50 dollars for an individual ticket. Tickets can be purchased online or at several storefronts around the Copper Country. Those interested in learning more about the Big Annie statue fund can find more details here.
