Tech Hockey Falls to Falcons – Saturday Sports Wrap

College Hockey

The 18th-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team lost at eighth-ranked Bowling Green 6-3 last night. The Falcons opened up a quick lead, scoring twice before Alec Broetzman got one back five minutes into the contest. Bowling Green then added two more. Trenton Bliss narrowed the gap with goals late in the second period and early in the third, but two more Falcons’ tallies ended any hopes of a late comeback. Mark Sinclair gave up the first three Bowling Green goals, and was pulled after just 10 minutes. Blake Pietila finished the contest.

Those teams play again tonight in Ohio.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team snapped its eight-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory over Ferris State University last night. Joseph Nardi scored twice for the Wildcats. Those teams face off again tonight in Marquette.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team turned on the power early, and cruised past Ferris State 66-51 yesterday. The Huskies surged to an 18 point lead in the second quarter, and were never seriously threatened. Ellie Mackay led Tech with 17 points.

Those teams play again this afternoon in Big Rapids.

The Tech men’s team couldn’t overcome as slow start, and lost 60-57 to Ferris State yesterday. Dawson Bilski led the Huskies with 24 points, and Owen White added 18. Those teams meet again this afternoon in Houghton.

Both Northern hoops squads take on Lake Superior State today and tomorrow. The men are at home, and the women play at the Soo.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings entertain the Florida Panthers this evening. Coverage begins at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Detroit Pistons visit the Golden State Warriors tonight.

NFL

The Detroit Lions have added another veteran front office staff member to assist their rookie general manager, head coach and defensive coordinator. Dom Capers has been hired as a special assistant. Capers has spent time as the head coach of the Carolina Panthers and the Houston Texans. He served nine seasons as the Green Bay Packers’ defensive coordinator.

The man who replaced Capers as Green Bay’s defensive coordinator is moving on. Mike Pettine has told the team he is leaving. Pettine declined to sign a contract extension after last season. The Packers have also fired special teams coordinator Shawn Mennenga. Assistant Maurice Drayton will replace him.
