Tech Hockey Falls in NCAA Opener

Denver University scored four goals in the first period, and eliminated Michigan Tech 5-2 in the first round of the NCAA Division One Men’s Hockey Tournament today.

The Pioneers got off to a quick start when Colin Staub scored at 4:42 of the opening period. Staub’s second goal eight minutes later started a flurry of three Colorado tallies within the following three minutes. The Pioneers added their fifth goal early in the second period, to take a 5-0 lead.

The Huskies responded later in the second period, with goals by Gavin Gould and Jake Lucchini, but couldn’t complete a comeback.

Angus Redmond took the loss in goal, as Tech was outshot 34-18.

The Huskies finish their season with a record of 23-15-7. They won the Broadmoor Trophy as the champions of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association post-season tournament.
