For the second straight year, Michigan Tech’s spring graduation ceremony will not be happening at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. There are plans in motion to offer an alternative event outdoors on the main campus Friday, April 30th in the afternoon. Faculty are being asked to save the date to help participate. In order to keep gatherings small, schools will hold separate ceremonies throughout a three-hour window on the campus mall.
Students have been notified of the changes and no word was included in the release regarding families being able to attend. If not, that would be a hit economically for the area, which relies on graduation to fill hotel rooms with visitors eager to dine out and shop before the summer tourism season begins in earnest. The release did not mention the possibility of using Sherman Field for an outdoor ceremony, which should be able to accommodate a larger gathering than the mall and still hold to proper COVID-19 protocols.
