The high school track season opens today, as local teams compete at the MTU Indoor Invitational.
Team CC
Team Copper Country opens its quest for a national title this morning against Hamden, Connecticut. Pregame coverage will begin around 8:45. They’ll face the Warwick Wildcats from Warwick, Pennsylvania, tomorrow afternoon at 3:00, and close pool play against the Foothills Flyers from Littleton, Colorado, Saturday at 1:00. We’ll broadcast all of Team CC’s games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox were rained out again yesterday. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on May 26th. The Tigers wrap up that series in Chicago this afternoon. Matthew Boyd will start against James Shields. Pregame coverage will begin at 1:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Meanwhile, several sports websites are reporting that former Tigers pitcher Mike Pelfrey has signed a minor league deal with the White Sox.
The Milwaukee Brewers picked up their first win of the season last night, defeating the Colorado Rockies 6-1. Wily Peralta threw five scoreless innings. Eric Thames, Travis Shaw and Jonathan Villar homered. Those teams meet again this afternoon in Milwaukee. Chase Anderson will start for the Brewers. Antonio Senzatela will make his major league debut for the Rockies.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons couldn’t hold a big early lead, and lost to the Toronto Raptors 105-102 last night. Detroit led by 20 in the second quarter, and still held a 12-point lead with eight minutes remaining in the game. Ish Smith led the Pistons with 16 points. With four games remaining in the regular season, Detroit trails Miami and Indiana by three games, and would also need to pass Charlotte to claim the final Eastern Conference playoff spot. The Pistons play at Houston tomorrow night. Tip-off is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings host the Montreal Canadiens Saturday night. Faceoff is at 7:00. Detroit will play its final game of the season, and its final game at Joe Louis Arena, against the New Jersey Devils on Sunday. Faceoff will be at 5:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
The Wings have signed defenseman Dennis Cholowski to a three-year entry-level contract. Cholowski was Detroit’s first pick in the 2016 draft. He just completed his freshman season at St. Cloud State University.
MTU
Kyle Monroe has been named the Most Valuable Player of the 2016-2017 Michigan Tech men’s basketball team. Monroe led the Huskies in scoring, and was an All-GLIAC First Team selection. A.J. Grazulis was honored as the Most Improved Player. Tommy Lucca earned Freshman of the Year honors, and Jordan Chartier won the sportsmanship award. Read more about the Huskies’ awards here.
Former Michigan Tech hockey goalie Angus Redmond has been named Rookie of the Month by the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. It’s the second such honor for Redmond, who recently left the Huskies and signed a pro contract with the Anaheim Ducks organization.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s soccer team has picked up another player from Bishop Mora Salesian High School in Los Angeles. Oscar Solano will join former teammate Moises Membreno on the roster next fall.
Durocher Alumni Game
The 4th Annual Andre Durocher Alumni Hockey Game will be held tomorrow. Players from Houghton, Hancock and Jeffers will face off to raise money for the Durocher Memorial Fund, which supports youth hockey in the area. The game begins at 7:00 at Dee Stadium. Admission is $5.00.
Packers
The Green Bay Packers Tailgate Tour visits Houghton this evening. A group of current players, former players and team executives will meet with fans at the SDC. Doors open at 5:00, and the presentation will start at 6:00. Basic $10.00 admission tickets and enhanced $30.00 tickets are still available through the MTU ticket office, and will also be sold at the door.
