Team Copper Country
Team Copper Country’s bid for a state title ended with a 4-2 loss to the Lansing Spartans in the championship game last evening. The Copper Country squad powered through pool play undefeated, with victories over the Kensington Valley Rebels 9-0, and Dearborn Belle Tire 10-0 on Saturday, and a 7-2 win over the Metro Jets Friday night. They edged the nationally-ranked Oakland Junior Grizzlies 2-1 in the semifinal game yesterday. Rory Anderson and Alex Nordstrom scored. In the title game, Lansing built a 3-2 lead through the first two periods, then added a late goal after holding off a furious Calumet rally in the third. Anderson and Dawson McKay scored.
Despite the loss, Team Copper Country earned a berth in the national championship series next month.
Finlandia University
The Finlandia University baseball team was shut out twice yesterday by the Milwaukee School of Engineering, 9-0 and 2-0.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons broke their three-game losing streak with a 112-95 victory over the Phoenix Suns yesterday afternoon. After another cold first half, Detroit broke the game open by scoring 35 points in an eight-minute span, beginning late in the third quarter. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led the Pistons with 23 points. Andre Drummond scored 18, and grabbed 18 rebounds. The Pistons visit the Brooklyn Nets tomorrow night.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will host the Buffalo Sabres tonight. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
The Wings have recalled Tomas Nosek from Grand Rapids. He’ll fill in for either Darren Helm or Mitch Callahan, if one of them can’t play tonight because of recent injuries.
MLB
In spring training baseball, the Detroit Tigers scored all their runs in the final four innings, as they defeated the Baltimore Orioles 7-1 yesterday. Matt Boyd gave up one run on six hits over five innings. Minor leaguers Matt Murton and John Hicks homered. The Tigers face the Mets this afternoon.
Tigers outfielder J.D. Martinez underwent an MRI on his sprained right foot yesterday. Team officials say they’ll wait until doctors review the results before speculating how much time Martinez will miss.
The Milwaukee Brewers held off the San Francisco Giants 6-4 yesterday. Zach Davies threw shutout ball into the sixth inning. Hernan Perez and Kirk Nieuwenhuis homered. The Brewers have today off.
NCAA
The University of Michigan advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA Division One men’s basketball tournament yesterday. In Midwest Regional play, the seventh-seeded Wolverines upset second-seed Louisville 73-69. They’ll face third-seed Oregon on Thursday. Ninth-seed Michigan State was eliminated by top-seed Kansas 90-70. Our coverage of the tournament continues Thursday on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
