Sweat off some calories at the 13th Annual Turkey Trot before joining the dinner table

Just before the Copper Country puts the turkey in the oven, some community members will trot with UPHS Portage. The 13th Annual UPHS Portage Turkey Trot invites the community to burn off a few calories before settling in at the dinner table. UPHS Community Health Coordinator Angela Luskin says that on average a single person will consume more than 3,000 calories daily.

Another thing I love about this event is it is open to so many individuals. You don’t have to run this 5K, a 3.1-mile event. There are many walkers. We have people of all different ages. The route will be stroller-friendly. It’s also pet-friendly as long as dogs are on leashes. And it just does encourage movement for all. – Angela Luskin, Community Health Coordinator

The turkey trot with UPHS Portage encourages people to stay active throughout the holiday season when people tend to relax on their diet or exercise plans. Participants will meet at the front entrance lobby of UPHS Portage about 8:40 am. The UPHS Turkey Trot 5 K will begin at 9 a.m.

Complete a registration form online or fill one out on Thursday at the hospital. Registration for the 13th Annual Turkey Trot with UPHS Portage is complete free. All pets joining the trot need to have a leash.

Luskin says the trot may feel the impact of the recent winter weather settling into the area. The event has used two routes in the past. If weather prevails the hospital will organize the route along the snowmobile trail as usual. But if the snow sticks around, Luskin says the route will travel around the hospital’s campus for a couple of laps. She adds participants don’t need to feel pressured to complete the Turkey Trot in that case too.
