Superior Watershed Partnership Receives $50,000 from MDARD to Support Sustainable Tourism and Disaster Preparedness

The Superior Watershed Partnership will receive a 50,000 dollar grant to further sustainable tourism practices and expand disaster response in Alger, Baraga, and Marquette counties. The Superior Watershed Partnership was recently awarded grant funds by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development that will support the partnership’s Great Lakes Climate Corps. The project will focus on the three-county area, with the intent to expand work across the peninsula.

SWP Executive Director Carl Lindquist says that moving toward sustainable tourism requires hard work to control erosion, build better trails, and remove invasive plants. Marquette Emergency Management Coordinator Brian Hummel says that the funding will also ensure SWP staff and GLCC volunteers are properly trained in the case of a disaster. Additionally, he looks forward to continuing to work with the Superior Watershed Partnership for future training opportunities.
