Superior Search and Rescue hosting open house

Fire departments are not the only critical volunteer forces in the Copper Country. Superior Search and Rescue counts roughly 30 people within its ranks and has played a role in several emergency situations recently that you may not suspect. Member Darian Reed talks about how the organization helped out during the tanker spill at Santori’s Corner.

The primary role of the UAV, or drone, was to actually 1.) Get some aerial imagery of both the accident itself, where the fuel was going, and then we continued to monitor the portage. EGLE and all the other agencies that are involved with that incident, they were very dependent on those images.

Superior Search and Rescue also played a huge role in getting a landfill fire under control in Ontonagon County earlier this summer. Utilizing their drone’s thermal sensors, the group was able to identify hotspots and help firefighters on scene focus solely on places that threatened to reignite the blaze.

As Superior expands into a third county, they’ll need more volunteers, particularly to the west. Most members are from Houghton and Hancock, located as much to an hour away from the furthest reaches of Ontonagon. Reed says there will be an open house on Sunday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Greenland Township Volunteer Fire Hall in Mass City.

He will be discussing that and more on this weekend’s Copper Country Today program airing on all three radio stations Sunday morning.
