Superintendents’ conference brings area many first time visitors

Superintendents of intermediate school districts across the state are in Houghton for a conference at the Continental Fire Company. The area has never held the event before. On top of the roughly 70 participants, many brought their families as well. Several are in the Keweenaw for the first time.

Outgoing Copper Country Intermediate School District Superintendent George Stockero says Houghton was awarded the conference two years ago and planning began in earnest at the start of the year, even before anyone was sure if an in-person gathering would be allowable.

Stockero says the Keweenaw will feel the benefits of hosting the event well into the future.

More than anything, I think it was a neat thing to have all of them come to the Copper Country, positive feedback of how beautiful it is up here. And in the end I think we’ll have many visitors coming back to the Copper Country.

The conference began Wednesday and ended today at noon. Stockero says many participants have plans to stay through the weekend and explore. The Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce created coupon books to entice conference guests to try out member businesses. Michigan Tech was also involved in helping the area put its most welcoming foot forward.

Stockero’s tenure ends on June 30th. This conference was the last major item for him to wrap up. Jim Rautiola has been named as his successor.
