State Historic Preservation Office Announces Next Year’s Lighthouse Grants are Open

With five large fresh water seas, Michigan’s fascination with the state’s over 100 lighthouses is prevalent in any coastal town. In the western Upper Peninsula, there are 22 lighthouses located along the Lake Superior coast from Ontonagon, Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga counties, Isle Royale National Park and the lonely Stannard Rock Lighthouse. Restoring lighthouses and preserving their history is important to understanding the lives of the people who rely on their service each night. The Michigan State Historic Preservation Office has announced the next round of Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program grants are available. The funds can be used for both planning and rehabilitation activities. Grant applications for the 2023 Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program are due Friday November 18th. Since 2000 MLAP grants have match 2.7 million dollars for restoration and preservation projects at dozens of Michigan’s 121 lighthouses.
