Start Your Engines at the Pumpkin Race with Keweenaw CAPE

Keweenaw CAPE challenges students to use their education in different creative ways. Tomorrow the organization will get youth in the copper country outside, thinking creatively and having some wacky fun with a new community event. One of CAPE’s instructors Anna Sanchez says that she wanted to start pumpkin races in Hancock after seeing the fun the event brought to other communities.

“With the unfortunate passing of Hancock’s DDA Coordinator, Deb Mann, we wanted to honor her memory with this fundraiser. Because she was such an integral part of Hancock and a huge proponent for community service. And for creating engaging activities for the community. Part of the proceeds from the registration will go toward a scholarship that will be awarded to a senior who has shown dedication to community and public service.” – Anna Sanchez, Instructor, Keweenaw CAPE

To build a bumpkin car for the race kids can get creative with how they engineer the vehicle. Sanchez says that they have chosen the hill on Ryan Street, because of its central location and proximity to their offices. CAPE works with local students to provide Driver education, after-school programming, and various education opportunities.

“We offer educational programming, whether that be afterschool programming and summer. We look at education in a much different way, not like traditional education, we try to be innovative. We want to put the learning in the hands of the child, or adult, that’s learning.” – Anna Sanchez, Instructor, Keweenaw CAPE

Keweenaw CAPE will need those interested in building a pumpkin car for the race to register by this evening. The group is also looking for volunteers from the area to help with setup, car inspection, race officiating, and more. Find more information and links to the Keweenaw CAPE Pumpkin race below.
