High School
With winter apparently not close to releasing its grip on the Keweenaw, the local high school baseball and softball schedules have been thrown out, and will be rebuilt. Several teams had scheduled season-openers this past week, but no games could be played. Many fields remain snow-covered, and it will take some time to put them into playing condition after the snow melts. The new target date for the start of a compressed season is May 11th.

MLB
Two late Tigers rallies fell short, as Detroit lost 8-6 to the New York Yankees last night. By the time Mike Fiers left in the sixth inning, Detroit was down 6-1. They scored twice in the seventh, only to see New York add two in the top of the eighth. The Tigers closed the gap with three in the bottom of the eighth, but couldn’t close the gap. James McCann and Jeimer Candelario homered for Detroit.

The Tigers have lost five in a row, and entertain the New York Yankees again this afternoon. Francisco Liriano will start against former Tigers prospect Luis Cessa. Pregame coverage is scheduled to begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift, but there is a 100 percent chance of rain early this afternoon in Detroit.

The Milwaukee Brewers suffered a 6-5 loss to the New York Mets last night. Zach Davies gave up single runs in the first, second and fourth innings, then was charged with two more as New York scored three times against him and reliever Dan Jennings in the fifth. The Crew got a two-run Hernán Pérez homer in the fourth, a two-run Ryan Braun round-tripper in the sixth, and a Travis Shaw solo shot in the eighth, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

The Brewers continue that series in New York against the Mets tonight. Chase Anderson will pitch against Matt Harvey.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University baseball team dropped both ends of yesterday’s doubleheader at the University of Chicago, 6-1 and 6-0. The Lions managed only four hits in each game.  Finlandia is scheduled to play another doubleheader at the University of Chicago today.

The Lions have added another women’s soccer recruit. Brianna Aberson-Distler was an All-Little Hawkeye Conference honorable mention at Indianola High School in Iowa.

MTU/NMU
Post-season tournament finalists Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan University dominated the final Western Collegiate Hockey Association Player of the Month honors announced yesterday. MTU’s Jake Lucchini shared the offensive award with NMU’s Troy Loggins. Philip Beaulieu of the Wildcats was named top defensive player. Michigan Tech’s Patrick Munson and Seamus Donohue were honored as the top goaltender and the top freshman.

NHL
In NHL playoff action last night…
– the Flyers defeated the Penguins 5-1. That series is tied 1-1.
– the Jets downed the Wild 3-1. Winnipeg leads that series 2-0.
– the Golden Knights edged the Kings 2-1. Las Vegas leads that set 2-0.

On today’s schedule…
– Colorado skates at Nashville. The Predators lead that series 1-0.
– New Jersey plays at Tampa. The Lightning lead that set 1-0.
– Toronto visits Boston. The Bruins are up 1-0 in that series.
– San Jose skates at Anaheim. The Sharks lead that series 1-0.
