Smooth SAILing this summer

It was another successful summer for the Skills for Adult Independent Living, or SAIL, program. The goal is to allow adult age students, 17 to 26 years old, learn how to develop their cognitive abilities to be aware and safe in different roles in the community, through work training.

Program Manager Leslie Kovar says that the Department of Natural Resources administers the most demanding opportunities at area state parks. Part-time work was offered at two new sites this year to great success, Tadych’s Econofoods and Michigan Tech Facilities.

Both of those sites were super excited about the crew, and it really went, I think, better than they expected. Both are willing to take on students next year, and additional students, so that’s really good feedback for us.

SAIL introduced a new concept for students from Horizons School as well.

A group of students from Horizons were our mobile crew. They got to travel around to different job sites to gain some different experiences. So, they got to do some hands-on construction, they got to do some demolition, they got to help out at our Calumet High School site, where they did some cleaning.

Kovar says that group loved the variety offered. In total, 30 students took part in Houghton, Baraga, and Keweenaw Counties, which is close to normal. The last program to wrap up in the region was a crew associated with the UP State Fair near Escanaba.
