At a young age many will feel the pull toward the freedom of the road and owning their first vehicle. But before the key can go in the ignition, individuals must complete driver’s safety courses in Michigan. In the state people can start learning the rules of the road from an early age, 14 years and 8 months old. Segment 1 courses in Michigan take students through 24 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours behind the wheel, and another 4 hours observing someone else drive. After which students complete a written and practical exam before receiving their driver’s permit.
The first step toward gaining a driver’s license for young Michigan residents. Keweenaw CAPE, that runs the local driver’s education courses, will start a new segment 1 program on March 4th.
