Sink The Sled Tickets Still Available

This Snowmobile IS going through the Ice!   But When?

That is the question that Houghton Rotarians are asking the community, its visitors and winter enthusiasts worldwide.

A vintage snowmobile was stripped, power-washed and placed on the frozen Houghton Canal in February 2017.   If you predict when the sled falls through the ice during the spring melt, you will win the Grand Prize.  The person who guesses closest to the date and time will be the winner and receive 50% of the net ticket sales up to $1000. The proceeds from the Sink the Sled contest will support Houghton Rotary’s scholarship program and other community activities.

The 1970’s Johnson snowmobile attracts attention from the snowmobilers travelling from Houghton to Hancock across the bridge over Portage Lake.  The snowmobile is located on the Portage Canal, on the west side of the Lift Bridge just off the boat launch on the Houghton side.  It is perched on top of a platform waiting for spring.

You can now check out the sled’s position from webcams available from SinkTheSled.com.  One shows a live streaming close-up view from the bridge and another is the “official” webcam view which will be used to determine when the sled has officially sunk.

To get a ticket to win you need to predict the date, hour and minute when the sled will fall through the ice and pay $5 for each guess entered or $10 for three guesses.  The guess closest to the day and time of the sinking will be determined by a time stamped web cam video. All entries must be submitted by April 15, 2017.

Tickets can be purchased on-line at SinkTheSled.com, from trail-side establishments along the snowmobile trails where ticket entry buckets have been placed or from a Houghton Rotarian.  SinkTheSled.com also has complete contest details and rules.

Houghton Rotarians made sure the sled was eco-friendly before it was placed on the ice. The sled was stripped of its gas tank, engine, clutch, belts and seat and steam-cleaned; and after it sinks it will be removed from the water.

The Houghton Rotary Club is a part of Rotary International and the local club meets Thursdays at noon on the 7th floor of Franklin Square Inn, Houghton.  Their motto is “Service above Self” and the “Sink the Sled” fundraiser will benefit local youth and the community.  For more information on Houghton Rotary and membership, go to http://www.houghtonrotary.org/.
