UPDATE: Baraga County Sheriff’s Department put out a memo on Sunday night saying that L’Anse Schools have been threatened.
There will be a larger law enforcement presence than normal at various Houghton County school buildings beginning today. In a press release sent out Sunday evening Sheriff Josh Saarinen says that everything his department has received at this time is of a generic nature, consistent with what has been seen throughout the state following the November 30th shooting at Oxford High School. He did not specify which districts have been the subject of online threats, but confirms that they are located within the Copper Country.
Hancock Superintendent Steve Patchin says the district is working hand in hand with the city’s police department, and conducted active shooter drills at both the middle school and high school last week. Patchin says no threats have been made regarding any building in the district, and a note from Houghton-Portage Township Schools Superintendent Doreen Kramer confirms the area’s largest district is also spared so far.
Municipal and county personnel are expected to be more active, both inside and outside of area buildings. They will also be at athletic contests. Saarinen’s press release says any and all communications that can be perceived as threatening will be prosecuted. He encourages students to come forward if they know of any potential danger. Patchin asks something similar, “We hope our students and staff will get to know each officer by name. They play a vital role in our community and we greatly appreciate their service.”

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office received a report and are aware of potential online threats to schools in the Copper Country.
An ongoing investigation has revealed unsubstantiated internet application threats and rumors consistent to threats across the State of Michigan after the unfortunate Oxford shooting.
The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office is working closely with all the schools in the district, their superintendents and local law enforcement on this matter. A greater law enforcement presence will be placed in to effect starting on 12/13/21.
It is important to note that any threat towards schools will be taken seriously and prosecuted fully. We encourage parents to monitor their children’s electronic devices. Please encourage your children to be aware, and if they see something, say something.
Reports can be called in to 9-1-1 or your local law enforcement agency.
