Joe Shawhan is the new head coach of the Michigan Tech hockey team.
Shawhan spent the past three seasons as an assistant to former MTU head coach Mel Pearson. He played college hockey at Lake Superior State, where he was a goalie on the team that reached the NCAA tournament in 1986. He was a volunteer assistant with the Lakers when they won two national titles in the 1990s. From 1995 to 2005, he was head coach and general manager of the Soo Indians. He holds the NAHL record for coaching victories, and was thrice named the NAHL Coach of the Year.
Shawhan then returned to Lake Superior State as an assistant coach for three seasons under Jim Roque. In 2008, he joined the staff at Northern Michigan University, where he served as assistant coach, and also as Director of Hockey Operations. He became an assistant coach at Michigan Tech in 2014.
Shawhan becomes the 22nd head coach of the Michigan Tech Huskies.
