Severe blood shortage in the Upper Peninsula

The UP Regional Blood Service says it is facing a severe and critical shortage as it tries to provide for 13 hospitals across the region. All blood types are welcome and they are accepting walk-ins for their drives or at their clinics, including the Hancock location. Coordinator of Blood Collections Rachel Heath says there are several blood drives planned in the next couple of weeks. That starts Wednesday afternoon at GS Engineering from 12:30 to 2:30.

We’re going to be at the Calumet Colosseum on June 7th from 3:00 to 6:00. We’re also going to be at the Chassell Township Hall from on June 14th from 3:00 to 6:00. We’re going to be at the L’Anse Township Hall on June 15th from 2:00 to 6:00.

They have an event planned in Ontonagon later this month as well.

Heath says visitors are encouraged to donate 30 minutes of their time and give blood, as long as they have not donated in the past eight weeks. More information can be found at the center’s website.
