Senator Ed McBroom Highlights Upper Peninsula Investments Set Aside by the State Budget

Senator Ed McBroom highlights investments into the upper peninsula set out in the state’s 2025 budget. Earlier this week the state of Michigan adopted the fiscal year 2025 budget. McBroom says that the state’s budget took months of work and negotiations. And while he was disappointed in some aspects he’s satisfied to see several efforts receive funding for critical medical needs for the region. Specifically calling on funds budgeted for the Ironwood Hospital for OBGYN services, and the Munising Hospital. He additionally highlighted funds set aside for the Marquette Regional History Center, the Pine Mountain Ski Jump, the Galdstone Senior Center, and the Stephenson Sports Complex. Senator McMbroom says that budget negotiations also leveraged support for infrastructure grants in Gogebic County, which the state expects a match for from Highland Copper for its copper mining development. He adds that he expects the 50 million dollars that recently passed through the House of Representatives to pass in the Senate.

Specific to the Upper Peninsula, the budget sends:

  • $1.2 million to the Ironwood hospital to assist with OB-GYN services.
  • $2 million to Munising hospital for numerous updates.
  • $1 million for debt assistance for the Marquette Regional History Center.
  • $1 million for County Road 573.
  • $1 million in debt relief for Pine Mountain Ski Jump at Veterans Park in Iron Mountain.
  • $800,000 for continuation of the state’s “cold case” investigation and training program at Northern Michigan University.
  • $500,000 for the Gladstone Senior Center.
  • $400,000 for track replacement at the Stephenson Sports Complex.
