Seed Swap for Gardeners Happening Next Week

Spring is just around the corner and Yoopers are anxious to get out into the world. As are many gardeners who are preparing for another growing season. March 19th from 10 am to 1 pm at the Portage Lake District Library there will be a seed swap. While there attendees will hear from a variety of local gardeners sharing their wealth of knowledge for growing different vegetables, fruits and flowers. Evan Lanese, who volunteers with the portage lake seed library, said the group hopes to make this an annual event to kick off season.

I think having the availability of seeds, without any cost involved, is really important for people maybe just starting up gardening. Or people that want to try to grow different seeds, but aren’t quite sure what seeds choose. It gives them a big variety of seeds to choose from.” – Evan Lanese, Volunteer Portage Lake Seed Library

Lanese and other volunteers with the seed library believe in educating the community on different strategies and techniques to growing the perfect tomato, or any other food. Seed libraries have sprouted in many areas throughout the u-p in recent years. As a way to help communities grow independent from grocery stores and fight food insecurity, by providing knowledge and of course seeds.
