Beginning Friday at 6 AM, the Michigan Department of Transportation will ease weight restrictions for trucking over most of the Upper Peninsula. The dividing line starts at US2/US 141 at the Menominee River Bridge near Iron Mountain. It follows US 2 east to Rapid River and runs north on US-41 until the highway links with M-28 in Harvey, just south of Marquette.
Frost restrictions are still in place north and west of that divider which includes the entire listening area. Concrete roads operate under a 25 percent reduction from standard axle weight limits. Asphalt and other flexible surfaces have to see freight reduced by 35 percent. If county restrictions exceed the state’s guidelines they must be met as well. The rules apply for all state trunk lines and federal highways.
