Last Thursday’s bombshell from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) allowing vaccinated Americans to gather without masks, an abrupt u-turn from previous statements on the issue, is not as all-encompassing as it may seem.
Superintendents Doreen Kramer and Steve Patchin, from Houghton-Portage Township and Hancock Schools respectively, are reminding parents that children under 12 are not eligible for the vaccine. Therefore, you can expect little change in policy within school buildings through the rest of the academic year. The CDC also referenced the fact that changing course for entire districts, especially when you get into major cities like Detroit or Chicago, can’t be done immediately. This reality is addressed directly on the agency’s website. “The time needed for schools to make systems and policy adjustments. Systems and policy adjustments may be required for schools to change mask requirements for students and staff while continuing to ensure the safety of unvaccinated populations.”
Canal View says healthcare settings, including hospitals, will continue operating under existing policy. It cites a passage from the Interim Public Health Recommendations for Fully Vaccinated People:
“In general, healthcare facilities should continue to follow the infection prevention and control recommendations for unvaccinated individuals (e.g., quarantine, testing) when caring for fully vaccinated individuals with an immunocompromising condition.” Recommendations for use of personal protective equipment by HCP remain unchanged.”
