The United States Coast Guard was called out to Manitou Island after a sailboat’s rudder became stuck on the lake bed Thursday. Initially, an attempt was made to tow the 30-foot vessel, but the weather made that too risky of an endeavor. Spokesman Jacob Lovell says it was resecured and the two people on board were taken to the mainland.
No injuries occurred, and the Coast Guard says the crew did everything right in this instance. Lake Superior sometimes wins even in that case. Lovell says that there are some ways to make sure you are as safe as possible, starting with understanding your limits as a seaman.
The Coast Guard was called out around 7:00 PM and arrived in Copper Harbor again near midnight.
