Sunday afternoon in L’Anse, music filled the pews above and beyond traditional worship service. The Sacred Heart Ladies Auxiliary held Song Fest at a different time than normal. Typically, it coincides with the first week of Advent in early December. That was canceled due to COVID-19 and shifted to April, hot on the heels of Easter.
Kristine Rice of L’Anse Township helped to assemble the program, and says she tried to present a mix of traditional and contemporary music. That includes everything from Ave Maria to a COVID tune sung by K-Bear’s Todd VanDyke. Rice says VanDyke is a great supporter of the event, and that includes stepping in to fill an absence on the hand bell choir. Rice says one instrument in particular got a lot of requests.
This year’s concert benefitted the Ripple Recovery House, which assists adult women battling addiction. Several members of the organization were in attendance at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Sunday.
Rice says donations were collected online and the performances were streamed by the Baraga County Catholic Community, in addition to in-person attendance, a first for the concert.
