Throughout the years the Hubbell VFW Post 4624 and students primed for military careers have developed a special connection. During the year the students with the Arnold Air Society and TSgt. Robert T. LaMotte Squadron works with veterans on projects and for community betterment. Cadet Major Ansh Ghosh says that the relationship between veterans and those planning to serve creates a sense of pride among the groups.
“It’s always felt super rewarding to talk to them because they have always had great general life advice. I wouldn’t say so much military advice applies, but they know what we’re doing what we’re going through, and what we will be going through. So it’s a feeling, much more of pride. You’re the ones carrying the mantle is what they tell us. While the groups work together to support community events and veteran memorials, over the years the students have developed a special event to raise funds supporting the Hubbell VFW. In the past funds have supported replacing windows at the post’s Hubbell building and support scholarships the post-awards to graduating high school students.
“But also just to help people support the community and to raise awareness for all past, present, and future Prisoners of War and those who are Missing in Action. So the community comes together in this. Not only to support the local veterans but also to help preserve the memory of those people who fought for the freedom that we enjoy today.” – Cadet Third Class Amanda Austin, LaMotte Squadron Air Force ROTC, Michigan Technological University
The Copper Country Community supports veterans not just as participants in the POW/MIA 5K. But also as a sponsor for the event. All participants taking part in the 5K will be entered into a raffle drawing for various prizes donated by local business sponsors. The Arnold Air Society and LaMotte Squadron POW MIA 5 K will have participants meet for registration at the ROTC building on campus. The POW/MIA 5 K with the Arnold Air Society and LaMotte Squadron will begin at 9 am on Saturday. Registration will begin at 8 am in front of the ROTC building on Michigan Tech’s campus.
