Rollover crash near the Quincy Mine grounds

Just before noon Thursday, a two-car accident led to a rollover of one of the vehicles.

Kent, Washington’s Barbara Holmes made a left-hand turn into traffic at the intersection of US-41 and Campus Drive, near the entrance of the Quincy Mine Hoist Association. The 83-year-old was shaken up when her airbags deployed, and was taken to UP Health Systems – Portage for treatment of minor injuries.

The vehicle that collided with Holmes’ Buick was driven by 67-year-old Cecelia Erickson of Hancock. She veered to try and avoid the collision, losing control. The car rolled onto its side and eventually wound up on its roof. Neither Erickson nor her 77-year-old passenger, Sarah Kangas, were injured.

Hurontown Fire Department used the Jaws of Life to reach the women and help them from the vehicle. Houghton County Sheriff’s Department was the lead agency at the scene, assisted by Hancock Police Department, Mercy Ambulance, Quincy Franklin/Hancock Township Fire, and Dave’s Service Wreckers.
