Isolated in the middle of Lake Superior stands numerous off shore light houses rising out of the water. The Rock of Ages lighthouse, only three miles away from Isle Royale, finished constriction in 1908. This isolated light, and others like it, often help ships navigate the most treacherous areas of the lake. And are engineering marvels, considering the logistical nightmare of construction on and around open water.
Since 2015 volunteers with the Rock of Ages Preservation Society, have worked to restore the 132 foot tall structure. And have already Restored the third and fourth floors, as well as small restoration projects. In recent years the society has begun to notice an increase of cracks in the lighthouse’s masonry. As further damage will affect the progress the group has already made toward restoration, fixing those cracks is now the groups biggest priority for the Rock of Ages lighthouse.
This summer the Rock of Ages Lighthouse Preservation society hopes to address those problems, but will need some help raising funds. The society plans to restore the lighthouse’s outside marine paint, which will help mitigate further deterioration around the masonry cracks. And allow their volunteers to begin preservation efforts in the lower levels of the tower.
