Revitalization efforts picking up steam

The Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance held its monthly virtual breakfast Wednesday morning, with Executive Director Jeff Ratcliffe giving a high level summary of the organization and its recent efforts. Ratcliffe discussed efforts to aid businesses in applying for COVID relief funds from the national through local levels.

Ratcliffe also delved into community revitalization projects underway across the region. He said at least four developers had been attracted to the Copper Country recently. Ratcliffe is excited about what projects they are working on. It’s the tough jobs.

One developer has at least nine buildings in Calumet. Three or four of those are in really dire straits but they are in the process, they were stabilized before the snow fell, and they are working on them as we speak.

Housing development, especially lower income, is high on Ratcliffe’s list of issues to tackle through 2021. He said KEDA continues to work with the Houghton County Airport to improve transportation options.
