MLB
The Detroit Tigers broke out the bats yesterday, and overpowered the Minnesota Twins 13-4. Alex Avila and John Hicks homered. Hicks and Victor Martinez each had three hits, as did Jim Adduci, who was called up from Toledo yesterday to fill in for the injured JaCoby Jones. Michael Fulmer gave up two runsover seven effective innings. Anibal Sanchez surrendered a two-run homer in the eighth inning.

The Tigers are off today, and open a home set against the Mariners tomorrow night. Jordan Zimmermann will pitch against Felix Hernandez. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Nelson

The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 yesterday. Jimmy Nelson gave up four runs before leaving in the sixth inning. Manny Piña homered. The Brewers host the Cincinnati Reds tonight. Matt Garza will make his first start of the season against Amir Garrett.

Brent Suter pitched a scoreless inning in relief yesterday, then was optioned to Colorado Springs to make room for Garza on the roster. Milwaukee outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis cleared waivers, and was also assigned to Colorado Springs yesterday.

Numerous media sources are reporting that Michigan Tech hockey coach Mel Pearson will be named head hockey coach at the University of Michigan. The Detroit Free Press says that Pearson arrived in Ann Arbor last night, and will be introduced at a press conference this afternoon. He’ll replace Red Berenson, who announced his retirement two weeks ago. Pearson was an assistant coach for Berenson from 1988 to 2011. He’s credited with bringing the Michigan Tech hockey program back to national prominence, with two NCAA tournament appearances in the past three seasons.

NHL
In the NHL playoffs yesterday…
– The Senators eliminated the Bruins 3-2 in overtime. Ottawa took that series 4-2
– The Capitals advanced with a 2-1 overtime win over the Maple Leafs. Washington won that series 4-2.

That sets up the matchups for the second round. In the Eastern Conference, the Senators will face the Rangers, and the Capitals will take on the Penguins. In the Western Conference, the Blues will play the Predators, and the Ducks will face the Oilers.

NBA
In the NBA playoffs yesterday…
– The Cavaliers advanced to the second round with a 106-102 victory over the Pacers. Cleveland took that series 4-0.
– The Rockets got past the Thunder 113-109. Houston leads that set 3-1.
– The Celtics defeated the Bulls 104-95. That series is tied 2-2.
– The Jazz downed the Clippers 105-98. That set is tied 2-2.

Today…
– The Bucks face the Raptors. That series is tied 2-2.
– The Wizards take on the Hawks. Washington leads that set 2-1.
– The Warriors meet the Trail Blazers. Golden State leads that series 3-0.
