Renovated Copper Harbor Lighthouse still hidden from public

Restoration work has been ongoing at the Copper Harbor Lighthouse, but it remains mostly a mystery to the public. Only so much can be gleaned from a distance and the property connecting Fort Wilkins State Park to the remote structure is privately owned, with no easement in place.

Park Supervisor Bob Wild says he hopes transportation by water can begin again soon.

The issue is that we have not had a vendor to run the boat tours out there to the lighthouse in several years. We’re in the process of working with a potential vendor right now, who is still going through the licensing and permitting process.

Wild says the historic lighthouse is always a frequent topic of inquiry from guests.

It’s a very popular question, it’s a great facility, and unfortunately we don’t have any other access other than access by water to the lighthouse.

The lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places so all changes, even fixes, have to pass extra scrutiny. The brick exterior had fallen into disrepair, but work on the foundation of the keeper’s quarters was also a part of the project.
