The Houghton County Recreation Authority and Michigan Department of Natural Resources are asking the public to weigh in on a proposed nonmotorized trail that would stretch between Hancock and Lake Linden next Wednesday at 6:30.
Buy-in is required of all municipalities affected, so the meeting will be hosted by Franklin Township at its office located at 49850 US-41, north of Hancock. The meeting is being hosted in conjunction with the Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance, Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region (WUPPDR), and the Keweenaw Convention and Visitors Bureau.
KCVB Executive Director Brad Barnett says if approved the trail is still in the preliminary stages of development and no timeframe for its completion is set yet. The DNR will be repairing the snowmobile and ATV trail that runs parallel to the proposed route this summer, following damage from the Fathers Day Flood of 2018.
Barnett says this trail is a bit different than most nonmotorized paths because of the uses it could serve.
Barnett believes it fills a niche for the region that is already well served by a comprehensive trail network.
