Protect the Porkies partners with Upper Peninsula tribal nations to organize the Gichigaming Water Walk. Over the past year Protect the Porkies and tribal nations around Lake Superior have voiced concern for the Copperwood Mine development in Gogebic County with the Highland Copper company. The community action group believes the development of a metallic sulfide mine so close to the state’s largest wilderness park, rivers and streams, and Lake Superior will have devastating impacts on the local environment. On Saturday Protect the Porkies, with tribal nations Bad River, Red Cliff, the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, Lac Vieux Desert, Sault Ste Marie, and others, plan to carry water gathered from the Montreal River at the Michigan-Wisconsin border from Ironwood, to Bessemer and Wakefield before ending at the mouth of Presque Isle in the Porcupine Mountian Wilderness State park. Since Protect the Porkies began its petition to the state to discontinue funding the project, the group has collected more than 45,000 signatures. Those interested in learning more about Protect the Porkies and the Gichigmaing Water Walk starting at 8 am on Saturday can find more details here.
