June is considered Pride month, when the LGBTQ+ community is celebrated.
Keweenaw Queers, a small local LGBTQ+ group put together a family-friendly Pridefest.
Hosted at the east Houghton Waterfront Park, also known as the skatepark, it was expected it would be a small get-together of maybe only 30 people. One of the organizers, Riley Powers, said that they went around about an hour after it started, and counted about 220 people, and it was likely the full number was higher.
Live music, a potluck, and informational booths accompanied the mingling and conversation, and the organizers were shocked and humbled at the popularity of the event, especially considering it was the first year for it.
They hope to run some small get togethers during pride month and through the summer as well.
