President’s address suggests no summer events again this year

In a primetime speech to the nation on Thursday night, President Joe Biden said that even if vaccinations go according to plan, the best that can be hoped for is small gatherings for major holidays like the Fourth of July. Western Upper Peninsula Health Department Director Kate Beer says the primary factor in canceling events like Bridgefest is crowd control, echoing that same theme.

Some of these events do allow alcohol. That is a factor in that once they’ve been drinking they don’t always adhere to the rules.

Plans surrounding large-scale vaccination programs continue to shift, with the department now intending to stick with the clinical model it has utilized since December. Beer says logistically, what they are doing now makes more sense.

It takes a lot of staffing to do something like that and it takes the right facility. What we’ve done is we’ve gone ahead with Upper Great Lakes and Portage and we are starting a clinic going at the old Water Street building here in Hancock.

Clarifying the concerns about a potential super spreader event in Calumet in February, Beer says contact tracing has determined that the problems were solely within the Marquette junior hockey program. The Copper Country continues to see COVID-19 activity levels decline.

In the most recent release from the WUPHD, Houghton, Keweenaw and Baraga Counties had 17 new cases combined. That covers Tuesday through Thursday of this week. There were 47 recoveries registered. Keweenaw County now leads the way with 19.61% of adults fully vaccinated. Houghton County is catching up quickly, at 15.74%.
