Portage Lake District Library Summer Reading Programs Encourage Kids and Adults to Pick Up a Book

Summertime seems like a great time for an adventure. Whether that means exploring the Keweenaw or discovering a new book. This summer the Portage Lake district library has partnered with local school districts such as in Hancock and Houghton, to encourage kids to keep growing their reading skills. Over the weekend the library held the program’s kickoff party during the Bridgefest 2024 Touch a Truck at the Houghton Waterfront Pier.

Librarians suggest starting with about 20 minutes of reading per day. However it’s easy to get into a really good book and let time pass by. Kids interested in joining the summer reading program can pick up a reading log from the Portage Lake District Library, or the Hancock School Public Library.

PLDL has also partnered with the Van Pelt and Opie Library at Michigan Tech to include college students and residents in encouraging picking up a new book. The program opened yesterday, with summer readers picking up a tote bag and reading log.

Portage Lake District Library will collect reading logs and award prizes for reaching reading and activity benchmarks throughout the summer. Some prizes the library will award to readers include Farmer’s Market Bucks, Keweenaw Cash, and Black Ice Comics Ice Cream. Those interested in joining a summer reading program for school kids or residents should contact the Portage Lake District Library for more information or visit their website at PLDL.org.
