Portage Lake District Library Explains August Millage Language to the Houghton City Council

In August voters will cast ballots.  Many people will focus on what happens at a national level. August elections carry several local measures with impacts more easily seen. In August the Portage Lake District Library will seek to renew the library’s same millage as in previous years. At last night’s Houghton city council meeting Library Director Katrina Lindy, Moriarty explained why the language in August may confuse some, even though the library does not seek any change to the funding it already receives from tax collections.

Why it’s so long is, we had to address something called a Headlee Amendment Rollback. So if anyone has been working with mileages a little bit. It’s taken off through the Headlee Amendment every single year. And it’s knocked down knocked down, knocked down every year. So we had to put wording in here that makes it sound as if we are seeking new additional millage. That is the legal terminology around it. But it is just to restore the originally voted-upon amount seven years ago. – Katrina Linde-Moriarty, Director, Portage Lake District Library

Ahead of the August 6th election, the Portage Lake District Library plans to host informational sessions where the community can ask questions and learn about updates and programs over the past year. Two sessions will take place at the library next Wednesday and on July 30th. Another session is hosted by the Bluffs on the 29th. Those interested in learning more about the portage lake district library millage can find more information online or check out copper country today here.
