High School

At the Negaunee Baseball Invitational Saturday…
• Calumet fell to Marquette 10-0. The Copper Kings were held hitless in a four-inning game.
• Houghton downed Calumet 12-9. Hudson Markham had four hits for the Gremlins, and Cam Anderson had three for the Copper Kings.
• Houghton fell to Negaunee 11-0. The Gremlins were limited to four hits.

In other Saturday baseball…
• Jeffers swept Westwood 9-1 and 12-1.

• Hancock welcomes Ironwood.
• Houghton travels to Iron Mountain.

In softball this afternoon…

NHL

In second-round NHL tournament play yesterday…
• The Panthers came from behind to edge the Bruins 3-2. Florida leads that Eastern Conference series 3-1.
• The Canucks held off the Oilers 4-3. Vancouver is up 2-1 in that Western Conference set.

Tonight…
• The Rangers host the Hurricanes. New York is up 3-1 in that Eastern Conference series.
• The Avalanche welcome the Stars. Dallas leads that Western Conference series 2-1.

NBA

In NBA Conference semifinal play yesterday…
• The Pacers pummeled the Knicks 121-89. That Eastern Conference series is tied 2-2.
• The Nuggets got past the Timberwolves 115-107. That Western Conference set is tied 2-2.

Tonight…
• The Cavaliers entertain the Celtics. Boston leads that Eastern Conference series 2-1.
• The Mavericks host the Thunder. Dallas is up 2-1 in that Western Conference set.

The Hawks overcame the odds, and claimed the top pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. Atlanta had just a three percent chance of landing the number-one pick in yesterday’s lottery involving the 14 teams that missed the playoffs. The Pistons, who had the best chance of getting the first selection, wound up with pick number five.

MLB

Justin Verlander held the Tigers to just two hits over seven innings, as the Astros claimed a 9-3 victory yesterday. All of Detroit’s runs came in the ninth, with help from Spencer Torkelson’s first home run of the season. Tigers’ starter Jack Flaherty pitched into the seventh, and gave up three runs on seven hits. Most of Houston’s runs came against Joey Wentz and Alex Lange.

The Tigers host the Marlins tonight. Matt Manning will come up from Toledo to start against Sixto Sánchez. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers couldn’t hold an early lead, and fell to the Cardinals 4-3 yesterday. All of Milwaukee’s runs scored in the first inning. St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol and bench coach Daniel Descalso were thrown out of the game for arguing about two questionable calls against their team. Both calls were overturned after replay reviews.

The Brewers entertain the Pirates tonight. Colin Rea will start against Mitch Keller.

Fishing

The annual Ontonagon Lake Trout Classic will be held this weekend. Events include the Ladies Powder Puff Tourney on Friday, with a $400 first place prize. The full tourney will take place Saturday and Sunday, with a $2,000 top prize. Proceeds from the tournament and associated events will benefit the Ontonagon County Cancer Association.
