Calumet hockey forward Rory Anderson has been named the LTU Michigan North Division Player of the Week. Houghton forward Jacob Kruse received honorable mention votes. Statewide voting is coordinated by the coaching staff at Lawrence Tech. KBear 102 is a member of the voting panel.
The Copper Country Youth Hockey Fund has split $2,801.85 in grant money to three local organization. The Copper Country Junior Hockey Association received funding to assist families with the cost of hockey registration for their children. Team Copper Country received a grant to support their hockey program for high school players. Calumet Township received funding toward the purchase of a handicap sled. The Youth Hockey Fund is an endowment administered by the Keweenaw Community Foundation. If you would like to make a donation to the fund, contact the KCF office.
MTU
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams host Wayne State tonight. The women’s game begins at 5:30, and the men’s contest at 7:30 at the SDC.
NMU
Both Northern Michigan University basketball teams entertain Saginaw Valley State this evening.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons won their second straight game last night, outscoring the Los Angeles Lakers 121-102. Andre Drummond had 24 points and 17 rebounds, despite resting the entire fourth quarter. Six Detroit players reached double figures in scoring. The Pistons host the San Antonio Spurs tomorrow night. Tipoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Washington tonight. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Goaltender Jimmy Howard had to leave last night’s Grand Rapids Griffins game midway through the third period, after he felt discomfort in his injured right knee. Howard is rehabbing with the Griffins. Team officials don’t think it represents a setback in his recovery, but doctors will look more closely today.
NFL
A day after releasing veteran running back James Starks, the Green Bay Packers said “goodbye” to longtime cornerback Sam Shields yesterday. Like Starks, Shields missed almost all of the 2016 season because of injury. His release comes with one year remaining on his contract.
Barneløpet Sunday
The annual Barneløpet will be held Sunday at the Maasto Hiihto Trails. The Barneløpet features Nordic ski races for children ages three through 17. Registration begins at 1:00 in the chalet in Hancock. Events will begin at 2:00, and awards and snacks will be handed out after the activities are complete. The Barneløpet is sponsored by the Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club, the Sons of Norway and the City of Hancock. This year, kids can take part for free, thanks to a grant from the Portage Health Foundation.
