Classical music returns to the western Upper Peninsula this week with the Pine Mountain Music Festival. Appalachian Spring, a piece by celebrated American composer Aaron Copland, will be performed utilizing mostly local talent.
Board President Diane Eshbach, along with her husband Charlie who is the marketing manager, were guests on Copper Country Today this weekend. The Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra, Marquette Symphony Orchestra, ballet dancers from Northern Michigan University, and the Marquette City Brass Band will all be featured to create a show that appeals to the eyes and ears. Each group has been working on their respective parts, but conductor Joel Neves will bring everyone together for rehearsals starting tomorrow in preparation for this weekend’s shows. The show caps off Art Week in Marquette before wrapping up Saturday night at the Rozsa Center.
Before the anniversary show, the UPstarts program takes center stage. It will be a peek at the future spotlighting the next generation of local talent, but also a celebration of tenor Myles Mykkanen. The Ironwood native was an “upstart” nine years ago and has earned national renown recently, says Eshbach.
Tickets can be purchased here. The UPstarts Recital begins at 4 PM, followed by dinner at The Bonfire restaurant. The curtain lifts on the anniversary show at 7:30. Capacity is restricted to 50 percent for the show.
