Michigan’s Copper Country is being encouraged to dial all ten digits when they make a phone call. Within a couple of months, it will be required. The transition phase is known as permissive dialing, which began Saturday. Usually, it applies when a new area code is created. During the permissive dialing timeframe, you can use either the old or new option and it will connect before a firm deadline forces everyone to adapt to the change.
The switch to 10-digit dialing is being made to accommodate a new way to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Just as 911 is used in emergencies, 988 will connect those in crisis with a potential voice of support. 211 has been used for community services, such as COVID-19 information and referrals for financial assistance or food banks. The Federal Communications Commission approved the measure in July 2020 to deal with the mental health crisis brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Existing numbers within the 906 area code begin with 988, potentially causing a conflict that could inadvertently redirect calls to the lifeline.
