The Copper Country doesn’t have a Hamtramck or Poletown district, but it has fallen in love with a Fat Tuesday staple popular in the Motor City. Econofoods and Roy’s Pasties in Houghton are two of several bakeries pumping out the Polish confection known for its distinctive round shape. Roy’s owner Trisia Narhi says a paczki is much tougher for a baker to produce than your standard donut.
Inquiries start rolling in before the ball has dropped in Times Square.
Roy’s preorders amounted to around 2,200 confections. Their total run of 4,500 is expected to sell out by mid-afternoon. Econofoods Manager Jon Dittmann says the grocery giant is doing close to twice that.
A typical paczki has around 425 calories. The rich mixture of egg, milk, and butter sticks to the waist, appropriate considering the holiday it is attached to.
