The Ottawa National Forest will move into the next phase of the U.S Forest Service’s Wild Rice Access Project. The national forest has invited members of the public to participate in public comment and the planning of the project within the Watersmeet Ranger District. The scope of the project will install improved access to four sites within the district for people seeking to harvest wild rice at Sucker Lake, Mallard Lake, Brush Lake, and along the middle branch of the Ontoangon River between old US -2 and Watersmeet. The project proposal will construct improved road access, trail access, and install canoe launches at each location. As well as a 500 foot boardwalk across the marshy terrain of Mallard Lake. Public comments can be mailed to the Iron River – Watersmeet ranger district or emailed to the Acting District Ranger. Public Comment will remain open for a period of 30 days, until August 24th.
