Ottawa National Forest and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Partnering for the J.W. Toumey Nursery Modernization Project

The Ottawa National Forest will partner with the US Army Corps of Engineers on a multi million-dollar project to revitalize the J.W. Toumey Nursery. The project will construct a nursery facility to promote the production of native plant seedlings, accomplishing goals set out by the USDA Forest Services’ Reforestation Strategy. Detroit District Project Manager Samuel Briscoe says that the exciting partnership will bring in industry experts to help design the facility. The J.W. Toumey Nursery Modernization Project aims to increase reforestation efforts to improve lands impacted by climate change, wildfires, insect infestation, disease, drought, flooding, and invasive species. Originally built in 1935, the J.W. Toumey Nursery is located in Watersmeet and is the only forest service nursery in the eastern region. Each year the facility produces more than 4 million bare-root and seedlings to meet reforestation needs in national forests. Those interested in learning more about the J.W.
