Verna Mize began her fight for Lake Superior in 1967. A native of Houghton and alum of Calumet High School, Mize has many ties to Lake Superior and the Keweenaw Peninsula. Today, after her passing in 2013, she’s still remembered with a memorial marker along the Portage Canal in Houghton. And she’s been honored in the past three years by a triathlon event named for her, the 4th annual Verna Mize Triathlon.
Organizers for the event are working hard to make sure participants and volunteers are knowledgeable of the course and important race information. The Verna Mize triathlon will take place on August 3rd. With two course options for participants, the Main Mize and Mini Mize. The event is open to all ages and does offer individual or team registration. Sign up for the Verna Mize Triathlon will cost 5 dollars for one person.
