Quick action by off-duty volunteer firefighters saved a Halloween event in Ontonagon from becoming disastrous. On Friday at 5:45 pm the Ontonagon Volunteer Fire Department was paged for a vehicle fire at Ontonagon Area High School during the Halloween Carnival. A firefighter that was at the event was able to locate a fire extinguisher to begin controlling the fire. Other volunteer firefighters living nearby also responded to the incident.
Ontonagon Volunteer Fire Department officials say a mini-van was smoking upon arrival, and firefighters disconnected the vehicle’s batter. The left rear panel of the vehicle was removed to ensure fire was no longer present. No injuries were reported in the incident. The Ontonagon volunteer fire department was assisted by volunteers on the scene and Dishaw Towing to remove the minivan.
