The Ontonagon Volunteer Fire Department responded to a brush fire over the weekend near 14 Mile Point Lighthouse. On Saturday the fire department responded to a brush fire around 3 pm. The department believes that it may have been burning for the past two weeks. The fire reached as close as 400 yards from the gravel road. The fire burned one to three feet deep in the ground, and some trees were burning from the inside out. Firefighters used 600 feet of wildland hose and a portable pump to draw water from Lake Superior to put out the blaze. Crews also used hand tools and bladder bags to contain the fire. The department reminds visitors to please make sure that campfires are completely snuffed out before leaving camp. You can find photos posted by the fire department of the fire on their Facebook page.
